Tobacco compliance checks help prevent retail businesses from selling tobacco products to minors. The checks are not setup to trick businesses into selling tobacco to minors. The checks make sure the business is upholding the requirements of their tobacco license.

How the tobacco compliance checks are performed is that minors, ages 14 to 17 1/2 are sent into businesses to purchase tobacco products. They are accompanied by an undercover police officer. The minors must bring their state issued ID and presented to the clerk at the time they attempt to purchases the tobacco. If the clerk identifies that the minor is under the age of 18 and does not allow the sell to happen. The minor takes back their ID and leaves the story. If the clerk does sell to the minor the undercover police officer will step in and take control of the situation.

The minors are paid $25.00 for performing the tobacco compliance checks. And the checks last the about 2 to 3 hours. If you are interested in helping to perform the checks contact Cheryl at cstetz@cityoffargo.com
